I understand your concerns Drew but I'm afraid you may be guilty of the fallacy of the middle ground in your argument. I don't believe we need to go to the extreme of banning all katanas but no honest gentleman requires a sword greater than two feet in length.

possible explanations for non-visit to hospital
as far as middle ground whatever i'd register my katana and have a katana license if that makes everyone feel better we can even have organ donor discounts b/c how awesome would it be to have a liver from some dude that lost a duel over some perceived insult to his honor? pretty awesome i think
- dull sword
- supremely sharp sword and perp healed instantly
- the cut landed and unbeknownst to the perp he is mortally wounded dude is just waiting for an appropriate time to bang his fist against the handle of the sword so the perp falls over and dies like maybe the day he gets out of prison

i bet it was a wooden practice katana and the reporter just said "ZOMG HE GRABBED HIS SWORD AND TOTALLY FLIPPED OUT!"
