what's everyone's opinions on verbage for these items? UAV quad copters drones R/C something? in my opinion a drone should have some sort of autonomy and could apply to ground vehicles but i think this will be the word that takes hold for most people uav sounds too military for a consumer product and quad copter is too long to say i mean i guess we could shorten it to "quads" but for me that term is already attached to something else

Just another term to throw in there: quadrotor (rejected as it suffers from the same length issue as quadcopter). If any one brand ever becomes super dominant a la xerox or kleenex we might end up calling them Parrots Blades or Phantoms (that last one is actually a model not a brand). Given my examples it looks like the letter "x" is the most important factor when looking for a brand to genericize.

i agree that UAV is permanently attached to military even though we tried to switch to RPV (remotely piloted vehicle) to avoid people thinking they are autonomous but it didn't take. drone also has a military taint to it. quads always make me think of these. i think it's gonna have to be quad copter unless some brand dominates.

speaking of which i've always wanted to keep a list of brands that have become the common names for things.

(Updated 2/9/2015 6:32 AM)

So I'm just now getting caught up on 409 starting with posts from about a year ago.  Pretty much just scrolling through.

Came upon this thread and V's post and saw "absurdly specific kitchen gadgets (all of which I asked for)" but read it as "absurdly specific kitten gadgets" and thought to myself "I don't know what kitten gadgets are but I'm pretty sure I want some."

That's my comment for the year.

Rachel's yearly post: 3 out of 5 because I have more to add about kitten gadgets but I really wanted a vivid baby having story that I requested in the other thread

when we went on vacation we bought a motorized laser pointer for the cat but it really needed a timer because you have to press the button to activate it so it didn't really fit the bill of occupying the cat while we're gone also I left it on the porch and it got rained on so it's dead 1 out of 5 nowhere near the level of laziness and neglect I was hopeful for

got the cat a little remote control mouse but she wasn't in to it and after 1 charge it died 1 out of 5

speaking of remote controls and cats the cat was outside and it was time to come in so I knew she doesn't like the rc helicopter I fit for being in Justin's wedding so I flew that at her and she ran inside but then this wasp comes flying full speed to attack the helicopter and rams into it and falls down dead and it's hilarious so I'm laughing and not paying attention meanwhile the helicopter is gaining altitude and the wind pushes it over the tree line and I look up and it's out of sight and I don't know what direction it's pointed so an hour riding around the adjacent neighborhood on my bike and I don't find it 2 out of 5 hilarity followed by despair but it's allI good for Christmas my quad can still corral cats but will shut of when it loses signal rather than flying off into the horizon in the name of freedom 4 out of 5 unstoppable marches of progress
