how is gentoo btw? i've been thinking of trying something other than ubuntu any recommendations?

a quick search suggests gentoo might be a little advanced for me i know several people who use openSUSE anyone have thoughts on that?

I haven't actually gotten around to installing Gentoo.. their shtick is that everything is compiled by your computer for your computer.. so you can tweak all the optimization settings the way you like it and it's meant to be the best possible setup given your specific hardware. Contrastingly for distro's like Ubuntu you download a pre-compiled binary version of the software packages that's compatible with your processor family.
But now that you've brought it up again perhaps I'll get off my ass and try it out on the lappy.
