patrick rothfuss made a deal with lionsgate for his kingkiller chronicles for movie/tv/video games (i mentioned the first book last page here) i mean good for him but i didn't really enjoy it that much i would've thought there were some better fantasy options out there but one thing i can think of is that there's not gonna be a tremendous amount of expensive effects it's mostly talking so that will keep production costs down for a better ROI whatevs

So I didn't see your suggestion and thus didn't heed it but I just finished New Spring the prequel for WoT. XD  It stands to reason that I'd start at the beginning but I didn't realize it was the prequel. D'oh!

Anyways nothing for it now.  I enjoyed it though.  4/5 fire weaves to a trollocs face!

I read that off and on in about 2 weeks.  So book 1 will roughtly take me a month.  The prequel has definitely piqued my interest though so there's a chance I'll read it faster than that.  If I start drinking coffee on the plane so I don't fall asleep I can get through big chunks on my 2 hour flight to/from phillly.

I finally renewed my library card (they require you to provide proof of your address every 2 years lame!) so now I can finally finish the 5th book of GoT (A Dance with Dragons).  It's been so long that I may just need to read the whole thing but we'll see.  It doesn't seem like the 6th book (The Winds of Winter) will be released any time soon so maybe I'll hold off on finishing the 5th book until a publish date is set and in the meantime I can continue reading WoT.

yeah so i don't remember all the details but you'll be spoiled on a few things and there was prob some stuff you read that didn't make sense? oh well one thing the series does well is exposes things at a relatively manageable pace

Well I suppose some things may have less of an impact but I don't think it's a spoiler really.  The prequel was entertaining as a separate entity.  I think that the worst consequence of reading it first is that I may not have the same appreciation of the characters that are introduced.  I'm sure that many of the names that come up play a bigger role in the other books so if I read it in order of publication it would carry more weight.

It's like seeing Tuco in episode one of Better Call Saul.  If you hadn't seen Breaking Bad (which I highly recommend that you do because it is by far my favorite TV drama ever.) seeing that character would have no impact but it also doesn't take anything away from the original series.

I guess since you realize it was the prequel you won't be surprised or immediately put off when things are suddenly fairly quaint for a little while in the next book

Yup as you said the pacing is pretty good.  So even in chapter 1 there's stuff to keep you intrigued.  I realized that my observation works both ways.  Characters introduced in the first book now have more gravity because I know their back story in the prequel.  Obviously there's less mystery surrounding them but I don't mind.

Coffee didn't help me stay awake on the plane this morning.  I just need to get more sleep. XD

Checked my buried news feed and saw something about WoT and had to make a come-back from the dead post!

The first few books IMO are excellent writing. In fact I thoroughly enjoyed reading them until about book 6. I know that 7-9 is when it REALLY slowed down. Took quite a bit of time for me to get through them since I kept falling asleep at night. This wasn't do to the ungodly hour. One scene that always comes to mind is when one of the characters goes into a tent for a meeting. Jordan spends ~50 pages describing everyone in the tent. He describes their clothes their faces their stances the serving men/women. 99% of the characters never appear again nor had they made an appearance up to that point. During the reading I didn't know who the important characters were so I was trying to catalogue all this information. When I realized what happened I felt defeated!

Having said that I just finished re-reading Song of Ice and Fire. And let me tell you the 2nd reading was super super enjoyable. I realized I didn't get bogged down with non-important threads and already had a knowledge of the characters. I feel like after this experience WoT warrants a second reading...maybe.

I did my re-read a few years ago and confirmed that book 2 of WoT is one of my favorites ever but yeah once I got to book 7 I started scanning pages till I got caught up

I really wish they'd do more with the franchise tv show or something

Just finished book 1.  It was a fun read and I agree things are revealed at a good pace.  Having read the prequel did seem to take away some of the suspense but it was still entertaining.

On to book 2! :)
