I dont think that it's trying to comfort the dying; I think the cat is just harvesting souls.I feel like we had this conversation but I didnt see it earlier in the thread; perhaps it was in person.

My guess is that the student got the sword as a present from his dad a police officer who raided the confiscated items for Drew's sword. :O The dad is probably also Officer Turner's partner! exactly one year from now another officer will give his son Drew's sword and so begins the legend of the yellow jacket katananananana. na.
