With the movie coming out, I re-read Project Hail Mary (and Logan read it too). It was fun to re-visit, and talk about all the nerdy stuff with him.

Both kids have devoured The Hunger Games series, and we just watched the 2nd movie last night. I did not re-read that one with them though.. Maybe I don't want to read about any dystopias :-[

Ada’s working on listening to the audio book for project: Hail Mary. She reads a ton but hasn’t done many audiobooks.

I’ve also been thinking about letting her start the hunger games series. I read the two prequel books for those and enjoyed them as well.

Ada just read the giver and cried at school. 😢

The giver is actually part of a series of books that are separate stories but in the same universe. I’ve read the second one as well. If you’re looking for a series for yourself or your kids.

I received The Giver as a birthday present from a friend and it definitely left an impression. I didn't know it was part of a series, so thanks for the tip!

I didn’t know it was part of a series either.

Is project Hail Mary just one book?  Maybe I’ll try that next.

yeah, we typically rewatch previous seasons of a show when a new season comes out, but when Handmaid’s tale came out, we didn’t want to because it too closely paralleled our own fucked up world.  Aryn gave up on it and now I honestly can’t remember if I finished watching it.  Anyhow, I never did read the books for that series, but I may need to check it out too.

Project: Hail Mary is just one book. Same author as the Martian.

I read the handmaids tale years ago and then only watched the first season. The book is a stand alone book and the first season sorta mostly follows the book. My understanding is that subsequent seasons are not based on any book or IP, just kinda made up within the rules of that dystopia. There is an epilogue in the book version so maybe the idea was to use the show to bridge the events of the book to its epilogue? Can’t confirm since I didn’t watch. I also haven’t revisited it since it hits a little too close to home right now.

Aryn bought two paperback copies of Project Hail Mary.  We’re going to read it book club style.  We’ll see how long it takes, bc I read slow af.

Good to know handmaids tale is just one book too.

I had to read the handmaid's tale at GT for freshmen English, got a B in that class, haven't watched the show prob won't, I remember we had an assignment to write dystopia story in the English class, don't remember what mine was tho, I also remember the prof not being impressed by me showing up late to every class, but yeah I'm over dystopias too

Barb and I had a date night Project hail Mary, I read the book but she hasn't, I thought it was ok they didn't really dwell on the whole regaining his memory gradually component so the "twist" wasn't as twisty I guess

I've been chasing the WoT dragon for decades now (see what I did there), really haven't found anything like it even having read a fair number of other Epic Fantasy serieses, most of brandosando's stuff is fine and it's competent but just lacks something hard to describe, the series I read before WoT was Thomas Covenant which is a bit older and less renowned presently but it stuck with me, it's got a barrier of entry tho- <SPOILER> the guy thinks he's dreaming it all initially and behaves poorly to understate it, it becomes a central character element</SPOILER>

Maybe I'll kick off my once a decade reread soon, Barbie false started it a few years ago

Jeremiah has been watching Harry Potter, and I heard it described as the penultimate millennial tale: magic school and solving problems with the power of friendship, but hunger games with killing each other is the gen z vibe
