hey nerds check your networks for conficker

summary: Conficker (aka downadup) is a pretty sophisticated and widespread p2p-based worm / botnet that's about 10 million strong. no one knows what it's intended use is but it's probably going to be used for stealing money rigging elections plastering the world with kitten posters or ending the internet.

yeah its been out there for a while but it's set to get a big update tomorrow which is why everyone's scrambling to disable as many clients as they can.

how does it get on your computer do you have to run a dumb .exe or allow a stupid plug-in or is it badass enough to do whatever it wants without even asking first?

it does not need you to run anything if you're directly connected to the internuts. however if any computer that's on your local network gets infected then it can directly connect to your junk. just get the latest MS updates (the patch has been out for quite a while) and you should be fine. if you do get infected it blocks access to windows update + a lot of antivirus sites and kills any processes associated with those kinds of programs. so i guess it's easy to tell if you're infected just try to go to the windows update site. and there's a bazillion removal tools available so we're good there.

I was up in D.C. this past week for my fellowship's annual conference. It turns out one of the new fellows is Virgil Griffith. Perhaps some of you are familiar with him he's the creator of Wikiscanner for identifying corporations/groups that are editing their own wikipedia pages. He was also one of the co-conspirators in the Buzzcard/Blackboard hacking incident. Turns out he's also a pretty chill guy so it was rather interesting talking with him

edit: turns out he's already been mentioned on the 409 here (one of Mike's posts)
