You think an all expenses paid trip to college isn't enough? I would argue that a MAJORITY of the kids that do play the sports wouldn't attend if they didn't. If they want to get paid they don't HAVE to go to college they can go straight to the pros. Choosing to go play in college is a choice. Choosing to play in college and not use your degree is a choice too. However I would argue that there are MANY people that would give anything for a chance to play the game they love and get a degree from Georgia Tech (or any school) without dropping a dime!

BTW I was on full baseball scholarship through school. Not only did they give me the 4 years but they gave me the 5th year also to finish my degree.

I feel like paying student athletes would lead to just the same 3 or 4 popular teams being competitive every year

actually bhicks a player must be out of high school for 3 years before being elligible for the NFL. technically they dont have to play in college for those 3 years but i'd be extremely surpised if any team ever drafts a player that worked at mcdonald's for 3 years after high school.

So if you dropped out freshman year of high school could you technically start when you would've graduated?  "out of high school" seems like it could be left up to interpretation but maybe a high school diploma is required.

Based off of the University of Georgia tuition costs an out of state player (on full scholarship) would be given roughly $110000.

To me that is a lot of money to give to an 18yo kid.

However what realistically happens is most kids get a partial scholarship and the allstars only get the full rides. Still when you think about getting $100k to play the sport you love it seems rediculous to me for a kid to do something against the rules (no matter how stupid they are) for $300.

the offense itself was in my opinion fairly minor.  $312 in impermissible gifts is not the end of the world.  considering that those allstars are being showered with free stuff from the school constantly it's easy to see why/how they could slip up on that kind of rule and take free shit they're not supposed to.  It's against the rules but probably could've been easily dealt with if they had just admitted what they did paid for whatever needed to paid for or taken some other kind of punishment.  The problem comes down to the athletic administration attempting to sweep it under the rug and not dealing with it in the way it should have been.  If they had dealt with it at the time in the proper manner I bet the absolute worst that would've happened was that those particular players wouldn't have been allowed to play in those final games.  But because both the players and the coaching staff and the administration decided to be dishonest the ENTIRE team and school is being punished by being stripped of their title.  The NCAA is using this as an opportunity to make an example out of the school but it fucking sucks that the rest of the team has to be punished.  The coach and administration should definitely be punished especially considering this isn't the first time tech's been in trouble with the NCAA.  At this point I realize there's probably not much of a better solution (at least in the eye of the NCAA) but the whole thing could've been prevented if the administration wasn't made of a bunch of dickwads (sp?).  They should know from past experience how much trouble they can get in for even a minor offense.

bhicks if it validates my comments at all i was also a college athlete at tech.  so i have at least a vague idea of the rules in place and the athletic culture at tech.  like most schools (I assume) most of the football players (especially the allstars) think they're the shit.  many don't realize how much they are being given when they get a full scholarship to play football and constantly expect more to be given to them.  and radakovich is an idiot.

the moral of the story is: it's not the crime but the coverrup that kills you - just like nixon scooter libby OSU USC etc. i have no dillusions about LSU being squeaky clean. i'm sure we have some skeletons in the closet just like every other major FBS school but the recent LSU case supports this too.

they found the problem during an internal review and rather than cover it up they reported it to the ncaa fired the offending coach and never played the offending player even though the offense was relatively minor (free transportation and lodging during recruitment). the ncaa accepted LSU's voluntary punishment of reduction of scholarships and only added a year probation to it.

that being said i do think the restrictions placed on athletes are a little ridiculous especially considering how much money everyone else makes off of them and for sports like football that have no minor league system or ability to go straight to the pros.
