Dad says it's not the thermostat it's the cooling fan sensor. Anyway I can drive it now as long as I keep the air conditioner on. I'm going to have to start wearing a sweatshirt in my car :-(. However I am choosing not to drive it today so I don't have to go to work!

How does keeping the AC on help? Doesn't that heat up the engine even more?

apparently there's a cooling fan that will be turned on if either of these are true:
1. The AC is on
2. The engine gets too hot and a sensor trips it
If that sensor is borked and your AC is off the cooling fan wont come on. Please correct any and all mistakes and inaccuracies jacob. kthx

Correct for the most part. But the other night when i was down there BOTH the fans were on non stop... not sure why. But yes matt. in the sense of a car running proplery you are correct.
