you've probably seen the commercials featuring billy mays for espn360. it pitches it as the ability to watch all sports covered by ESPN online from any computer - "live sports at work? better than work at work!" and "now my job is way less soul crushing :)".

but from wiki: "ESPN360.com is a broadband network for live sports programming in the United States Mexico Brazil Chile Middle East and Europe (except Italy). In the U.S. the network can only be accessed through Internet service providers who have signed up and paid ESPN for the service. The entire service is paid by the individual as a part of their ISP cost whether they use the service or not."

so in order to have access your ISP has to pay the ransom to ESPN for ALL subscribers on their network (cant be an optional tier) so everyone gets it (and pays for it) whether they want it or not. (comcast does so ya'll are paying for it and can get it. cox does not so i dont have to pay for it but i also cant use it.) but if your provider doesn't pay for it you're SOL because there's no personal subscription because then no provider would ever agree to paying the ransom.

and of course if ESPN is broadcasting a game they have exclusive access rights that prevent any other service (subscription or not) from broadcasting the game online. farking bullshit

so you're saying that I can cancel my comcast tv subscription and I won't miss a single CF game (that's covered by espn or an affiliate) when Labor Day rolls around? w00t! That was actually one of my major complaints about cancelling tv!

even though you can't get access directly just have a non-sports-loving friend who uses comcast internets to sign up for remote access and use their account!

remember you can watch from "any computer" and i'm assuming any internet connection as long as you have an account with them. i'll sign up now and you can try to login with my acct. :D edit: well I guess we have to wait until August 1st to test my theory.

Snippet from espn360.com:

"How to Get Access to ESPN360.com
ESPN360.com is available at no charge to fans who receive their high-speed internet connection from an ESPN360.com affiliated internet service provider. ESPN360.com is also available to fans that access the internet from U.S. college campuses and U.S. military bases.

Your current computer network falls outside of these categories. Here’s how you can get access to ESPN360.com.

1. Switch to an ESPN360.com affiliated internet service provider or to contact your internet service provider and request ESPN360.com. Click here to enter your ZIP code and find out which providers in your area carry offer ESPN360.com

2. If you already get ESPN360.com at home and activated remote access sign in using the myESPN link in the upper right hand corner. In order to activate remote access you must sign in through your ESPN360.com affiliate Internet Service Provider.

3. For Verizon Customers Only:
Sign-in using remote access if you already get ESPN360.com

4. For Comcast Customers Only:
Great news! ESPN360.com will be free with your Comcast High-Speed Internet subscription beginning August 1st.
"

Once it's activated I'm assuming you can access it from anywheres! w00t! FU comcast! And thanks ESPN for providing another way to stick it to comcast!

btw espn360.com is good to go! We cancelled our comcast service so I'm not sure how long it'll take them to cancel my account but in the meantime you can login and watch using my username (which is the same as my 409 account name but with 83 at the end) and the password is two words all lowercase with no space: first word is the name of our soon to be ex-cable provider; second word is "sucks". I'm currently watching a replay of 2009 us open on my desktop and my laptop while on Clear interwebs so anyone and everyone is free to use my account until it is cancelled. One caveat: they made a custom flash player that can't be installed on Linux. :( So you'll have to use wine to get it to work or find some other work around. Some people have complained that the video quality is terrible when using wine. I'm not really familiar with it so I'll let matt set it up when he gets home. I plan on streaming espn360 24/7 on all devices that can manage it until they cancel my account as my final FU to comcast. I encourage you guys to do the same. Maybe if I get enough devices playing crappy feeds I'll forget that I won't be able to watch games in HD. :(
