With all this talk of Ubuntu I thought I'd try to reinstall it on an ol' junker I have lyin' around. I installed via text mode 'cause it has low memory but it will only boot into the text mode/command line after I installed. Is this because the comp is a p.o.s. or am i missing some prompt that I need to boot/run the gui.

after you boot up try typing "dmesg" to see if there are any system errors that are being logged.
you could also try typing "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" to make sure the main ingredients for a graphical desktop are installed.

yeah after about 150 forum posts I finally got the command line that I needed. T'was strange that it didn't install my GUI automatically. I can get to the desktop but once I click my mouse everything freezes up. I'm gonna give 6.10 but this compy just needs some more ram methinks. 64 mb is cuttin' it kinda close.

yeh that's probably why it didn't install the GUI -- you should have at least 128 megs for that :)

an extra 128 of ram did the trick. Now to turn this into an overly fancy online radio on bootup.
Anyone know if there's a way to login without it requiring a password to login?

Here's a page about autologin for mythTV boxes but the methods should work in the general case.
Make sure you read the "Note on Ubuntu" section before proceeding :)
