I like that they added descriptions and stuff to the processes and services.

I have a budget of $5000 for a new computer for school. The department is suggesting that I get a laptop but I can really do whatever I want. Any thoughts on what I should do with this? The only real restriction is that everything has to be on a single purchase order so I can't order parts from various locations. All the upgrades need to be at least somewhat justifiable as necessary for my research but that shouldn't be too difficult.

well if they're suggesting a laptop and you're willing to go with that you can get some pretty beefy "mobile desktops." Couple that with a docking station with dual monitors and you should be good to go.

A quick configure on Dell looks like a can get: Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz 4GB DDR2 200 GB SATA 7200 rpm hard drive 512MB GeForce 7950 GTX Additional 24" Widescreen monitor (the laptop has a 17") + a few other add-ons and still have >$500 to spare

that's about what i was seeing from dell -- but i'm not sure if the package i was configuring included a "docking station" or if it just had the monitor. the docking station will allow you to use a fullsize keyboard and regular mouse which for me would be a must-have in a desktop usage situation.

yeah i wanted the docking station but the only one listed as an option with that model was pretty crappy basically just a USB hub (5 usb 1 ethernet that's all). i was planning on getting the bluetooth keyboard/mouse so the lack of a docking station shouldn't be too bad.
