haha. my chinese teachers were pretty much never satisfied regardless of how well you did. but they were never abusively negative. they just had high expectations and expected me to be more motivated. but i love them to death as well as my chinese step-mom and i think China gets a bad reputation distorted by the media.

I think Amy Chua is getting a bad rap about her book. If you listen to her talk about it she describes it as the story of how she had to soften her ways from her original strict approach (if you even read the entire cover it includes the phrase "how I was humbled by a thirteen-year-old"). Apparently most of the criticism is coming from people who either didn't read the book at all or only read the first chapter and assume they know where she's going with it.
yeah i've heard interviews with her and she says explicitly that her book is not a parenting guide but a story about a mother and her daughters and what she learns from them. but i have a hard time forgiving a mother who is that harsh to her children and didn't let them do a whole lot of normal childhood things (sleepovers play dates etc). they'll never get that back. i look at my students and see the same crap going on and i feel so bad for the kids. they shouldn't have to spend their saturday afternoons taking math classes with me. i just think there is something inherently wrong about that. they're kids and already spend plenty of time at school and doing hw. they shouldn't have their childhood taken away.
pretty cool. I got "4.87 105s" on my first try although i didnt realize it was timing me on the first parallelogram test :)
edit: second try 4.81 85s. not much better :)
