First thing in my mind is the question if you have used any Sony products lately. I'm guessing you've used this CD-ROM before so it's probably unlikely that the jumper pin setting needs to be changed. Double check the wiring and make sure it's plugged in all the way. Also try switching which plug on the IDE cable the CD-ROM is plugged into. If still no go try Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager and look at your cd drives. If there's anything there uninstall them and reboot & see if that works. After the reboot Windows will automatically reinstall them if they're connected and detected.

ya know what i think i forgot to mention that during final assembly i forgot to plug in the "power" plug to the CD drive and then i plugged it in and i think i plugged in the wrong data cable plug there is one titled "dirve 0" and "drive 1". at first i plugged it into "drive 0" and then when i booted it said "cannot find drive 1 hit f1 to continue blah blah blah" and then when i realized i hadnt plugged in the power plug i changed the data cable. in any case im still fucked. i think im just going to buy a fancy new one from the Informaiton super highway somtime this year. like maybe tommorow. Or maybe like next week. ok maybe ill never buy one.

plugging it in to the wrong place or forgetting the power wouldnt kill it. plugging the power or maybe the data backwards would kill it tho. i still have money on jumpers

Check the jumper settings man. You'll have to look up the settings for your specific drive but it will be worth it if that happens to fix it.
