Hooray for the cable guy. now instead of sitting in my apt doing nothing after work i can sit in my apartment doing nothing while being bombarded with colors and sounds.

incidentally i'm also renting a DVR so I'll never miss another episode of 7th heaven.

How's them DVR gizmos? Can they get hooked up to a computer? Like say recording the entirety of Frasier to a harddrive?

*Reviv'd*

So I've been having a little fun at home this Christmas. My friend John Michael (with whom I'm going to Las Vegas) has an aunt who bought a new computer and no longer needed her 1.8 Ghz /128 MB / integrated everything IBM computer complete with a 15" LCD (or maybe its 17 but i'm so used to my 19's it looks small :-). So I put the LCD screen on my mom's computer she has in the kitchen for recipe & address book type stuff and (now for the reason this post is in this thread) I set to work haxing the box into a MythTV Personal Video Recorder. Before I drove home I ordered a $30 TV-capture card from Buy.com with my google checkout account which gave me $10 off.. and then there's the $20 mail in rebate.. so I win.

Then I ordered 256 more MB of ram to kick it up a notch.

Installed Ubuntu 6.10 a bunch of codecs and fonts DVD ripping software and finally MythTV.

I dont suspect I'll get much stellar performance out of it but this will be the practice round. I'm giving this one to my parents so the goal is usability and minimal maintenance.

The capture card hasn't arrived yet so there isn't much else worth reporting -- perhaps I'll send some screenshots if I actually get the stuff to work. I'm a bit concerned that I won't be able to find linux drivers for the card.. stay tuned (lol do you see what i did there)
