summary: the $499 version of the ps3 won't have digital video output (HDMI) the new copy protection scheme for both blu-ray and HD-DVD (HDCP) requires a digital signal between the player and the TV so the $499 ps3 will have to down-convert 1080p to 540p so no high def movies for the $499 ps3

I'm still working on getting my $7.50 and replacement CD. You know I'll get mine though.
And I can't remember if we discussed this before.
Summary: Game publishers are upset because the second-hand game market isn't getting them any money. Sony has a patent with the ps3 so that a game disc only works with the first ps3 it's used in. You don't own the game; you own a license to play it. I.E. you couldn't take your game and use it on someone else's ps3. But Sony is pretty good about consumer rights so I don't think they'll actually use it.
