getting serv'd @ PMC Apparently these drives aren't good for RAID which we might want to setup for a media server. Although I've never set one up before so I don't know what I'm talking about. What do you think 2 TB for now? Maybe 3? I have a feeling my e.b. won't last me until the end of the year this time. :D

edit: The only problem is that the motherboard in the box I was planning on using as the server doesn't support SATA drives. le sigh. I guess I'll just have to get a cheap case and mobo and maybe 1gb of ram unless someone wants to donate their rig?

i'm willing to put some dollars in to the media server.. we can discuss our options in detail at the next house meeting (i think someone gets voted out this time unless they get the immunity idol.. tune in next week to find out!).

Arif and I spent the later hours of this evening browsing the newegg looking for the best possible configuration for a media server and landed upon a setup similar to the one listed above. Differences being 4 GB ram instead of 2 GB and 610W power supply instead of 650. After a few giggles at the notion of paying $0 for this machine (thanks extended benefits) Arif hit the "gftg" button and ordered the box.

But then we started discussing the possibility of a Home Theater PC and what that might include. I told him about passing time at Harris by looking up HTPC configurations on newegg and passing them around to co-workers.. so we started browsing the newegg. At one point we considered adding a blu-ray drive to the configuration because that would have been pretty sweet. but we decided against that because he can just buy a PS3 with his Diner's Club points. So after all was said and done we went ahead and bought us an HTPC. I'm going to be putting a lot of computer parts together in a few days :)

There were some slight mods but it's been bought'd. Well it has a built in graphics card so you might could play css with the settings low. We also put together an HTPC and bought'd it as well. I'll post the specs tomorrow w00t!

Well ours is going to have a HD TV capture card (and probably a second non-HD capture card) an HDMI video output and a connection to the Media Server for storage. It'll be like another DVR box except more flexible. It should be able to automagically remove commercials from all recordings (yay) we can burn any recordings to DVD and we should be able to stream anything that's recorded to any other PC in the house. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get the Xbox to play something that this box records but I'll definitely put some effort into it.

Oh yeah FYI I got the Xbox connected to the internets so yeah.
