Here's part of an email I received from Howard Kilman our general manager and America's VP about "Delivery Excellence Regional Winners." Wink Wam indeed:
"• East: Census
The team at Census has just completed a major milestone on in Jan of 2008 with the Non-Responsive Follow-Up (NRFU) mobile application completing functional testing and being prepared for production release.
The Census project is developing the application that will run on a handheld device that will be used as part of the 2010 Census. Recognized by Microsoft as the single largest mobile application ever built on the Windows Mobile Platform the team has been working diligently to create high quality stable code that will make the 500000+ users manageable from a support perspective. Unique challenges have been managed by the team include scaling the synchronization process to support the required frequency of data transmission support for nomadic users that may go long periods of time without a connection cellular bandwidth usage control patch deployment and device provisioning.
This has been a very important engagement to Avanade and has included the contributions of 20 people and has produced more than 5 Million dollars of revenue for the region so far!
Avanade represents more than 90% of the development staff for the mobile application team which is broken up as Application teams and Architecture teams. The application team has focused for the last 6 months on the Non-Responsive Follow-up application which will allow Census to survey millions of people who did not respond to the Census Day paper survey form. This includes managing the assignment of cases collecting data based on hundreds of questions context sensitive questions multiple language support and reporting on the data all from the handheld. The Architecture team has focused on improving synchronization from the previous production dress rehearsal in Q2/3 2007 adding framework support for NRFU localization of applications as well as adding new security and usability features for the NRFU release. The team faced significant issues around unit testing on mobile devices an application of such a large scope with hundreds of forms and poor tool support the team enhanced their ability to test code significantly in this release through customization of open source tools.
The team is now gearing up for production support during dress rehearsal of NRFU as well as planning for next phase development activities that should extend the team through the remainder of FY08."
I don't know anyone on the team but that sucks if the app isn't actually used.

heh...I read that article and find it grotesquely interesting/fascinating. I especially liked 1) the part where they called him a poor farmer and then 2) the part where he said he refused the CT scan to make sure her internals were OK b/c he thought she was acting normal.
